Omija showing its true colors

【Danyang=KoreaPlus】 Reporter Bong Ji Hyun = Omija showing its true colors.

Omija is coming to the peak of its maturity. Also known as Schisandra berry, the Omija berry is directly translated as ‘5 flavor berry’. It does ruminate the 5 flavors – sweet, sour, bitter, spicy, salty with sour being the strongest taste.

All the different tastes are from different parts of the berry, but overall fresh berries are usually not consumed fresh as the overbearing taste is not for the faint hearted, although some individuals do enjoy the taste mixture. These vibrant red berries have very high antioxidant properties, especially helpful in respiratory discomfort, and prove a wide range of very loyal consumers.

Omija is harvested much later than most crops, always coinciding with Korea’s biggest festive season Chuseok. Harvested berries are mostly made into fermented extracts, as well as dried to be made into fruit tea or ground into powder for direct consumption or seasoning.

With Omija berries getting very close to the end of its growing cycle, its true colors are showing through its vines making farmers preparing themselves for the upcoming harvesting hustle.

Do visit Dokkaebi Town in Banggok town of Danyang to have a hands-on experience of harvesting and making your own Omija extract during the harvesting season and enjoy the beautiful journey there with vibrant burst of autumn colors.
